Compounds of Cannabis

Cannabinoids, Terpenes, and Flavonoids

In The Beginning..

So, CBGA is the first cannabinoid formed from a biosynthetic reaction that joined two smaller pieces together — it is also the precursor to all other natural phytocannabinoids. Next, CBGA is cyclized into THCA, CBDA, or CBCA via the enzymes known as THCA synthase, CBDA synthase, and CBCA synthase. The presence and relative quantities of the specific enzymes determine which cannabinoid is the major product from each particular strain and each particular cell.

Cannabinoids are a group of chemical compounds found in cannabis plants and some other species. They interact with the endocannabinoid system, a complex regulatory system in the human body that plays a role in maintaining various physiological processes, including mood, pain sensation, appetite, immune function, and more.

Terpenes are aromatic compounds responsible for the distinctive smells and flavors of different cannabis strains. They may also interact with cannabinoids to produce specific effects. Examples include myrcene (earthy, musky), limonene (citrusy), and pinene (piney).

Flavonoids are compounds that contribute to the color, flavor, and aroma of cannabis. They also have potential health benefits. Quercetin, apigenin, and kaempferol are examples of flavonoids found in cannabis.

The combination of these compounds in different proportions contributes to the diverse effects and potential benefits of cannabis & creates what is call “the entourage effect”.
